Hair Care Tips to Reduce Hair Breakage and Loss

I used to lighten my hair on the regular and after it got damaged, dried out and totally fried, I stopped. I was getting concerned about hair loss and the amount of hair going down the drain and on the floor. Now I really concentrate on keeping my hair healthy and strong.

I’ve developed a routine that seems to work for me and I’d like to share it with you.

  1. Shampoo: I start with a really good shampoo, I’ve been testing and loving my new SLS free solid shampoo bar (plus no plastic bottle, yay!). It has excellent foaming properties (let’s face it, we want our shampoo to have bubbles) and it really cleans my hair without the drying effect of SLS. I also add in some Argan oil for extra conditioning and Marshmallow Root powder to promote new hair growth.
  2. Conditioner: I follow with my reconstructive hair conditioner, which also contains some extra botanicals to keep your hair healthy and strong. I leave it on for about 3-4 minutes, longer if I’m shaving my legs. Then rinse.
  3. Pat Dry: Use your towel to pat your hair dry, don’t rub or pull. If you have longer hair, you can gently squeeze out excess moisture.
  4. Conditioning Detangling Spray: I then spray on my new conditioning detangling spray (I’ve been testing it for about 4 months, it’s amazing and you can get it in all my fragrances).
  5. Bamboo Comb: Gently comb your hair with a wide tooth sandalwood comb. The wide tooth design will not pull or break your hair and it’s plastic-free and biodegradable. If you use the detangling spray before combing, you will not have any snarls, therefore decreasing hair breakage.
  6. Hair Gel (optional): I have thin, frizzy, mind of its own hair, so applying a bit of conditioning hair gel on wet hair helps me to style and shape it. I have a new one that I’ve been testing for about 4 months which I love.
  7. Blow Dry (optional): I only blow dry when I have an event to go to, I usually just let it air dry. I try to use the lowest heat setting, but if I’m in a hurry, I’ll need to use the higher heat. The conditioning detangler spray and conditioning hair gel helps protect my hair if I need to do this. I do use a round bristle brush to help with styling.
  8. Hairspray (optional): Once again, my hair has a mind of its own and tons of cowlicks, I use the Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz. It has no sulfates, parabens and it’s non-aerosol, vegan and cruelty-free. TIP: It has a light scent, so I open the bottle and put in a few drops of my favorite perfume oil.

When I wake up to crazy bed head every single morning, I use a gentle to my hair bamboo bristle brush to get it under control and get a little scalp massage.
Finally, I love that I can scent all the above products with my favorite perfume oil. It will blend with the perfume I put on my skin for the day. And my hair smells amazing.

Simple Face Care Routine for Glowing Skin at Any Age

I always get compliments on how great my skin looks and for a non-makeup wearing 55 year old, it’s good to hear. I get asked about my skin care products and routine and I thought I’d share it with you here.

1. First thing in the morning I wash my face with charcoal soap and warm water. Then I apply unscented avocado lotion, taking care to avoid my inner eye area (everything bothers that area for me) and making sure to moisturize my under eye area (the old eye bags), throat and neck.
2. Before bed I’ll wash my face with charcoal soap and warm water. Then I’ll apply face oil, also making sure to get my under eye area, throat and neck.

That’s it!

If things are feeling dryer than usual, I’ll add a little lavender oil to the face oil and lotion. If I am getting any breakouts, I’ll add a little tea tree oil to the face oil and lotion. If you don’t want to mix it into your entire face oil and lotion supply, you can get a small vial of either lavender or tea tree and just add a drop, no more, into the palm of your hand and mix it with the lotion or face oil. Then apply it to your skin. Keep the essential oils away from your eyes!

Why I chose charcoal soap: It is suitable for all skin types, it extracts excessive oil from oily skin but also moisturizes dry skin. It’s also vegan, sulfate (detergent) free and paraben free.
Why I chose avocado lotion: Avocado oil (the base of this lotion) is rich in vitamins that lock in moisture and encourages skin to shed dead cells and grow new ones, promoting healthy skin development.
Why I chose face oil: My face oil formula was specially developed for all skin types and to promote skin rejuvenation while you are sleeping. The rock stars in this serum are Argan, Evening Primrose and Rose Hip Seed oils.

Also, about every two weeks I’ll do a face mask. I’ve tested so many of them, but current favorite is the Eve Hansen Collagen Sheet Mask.

Here’s my quick review:
Prepped by washing my skin with charcoal soap and warm water, then patted dry.
Opened the package and peeled off the protective film. Feels slimy, but I power through. I unfold it and place it on my face. I have to pull a few times to get it to lay flat, there are folds and creases that want to stick to each other. Be careful not to tear it.

Chill for 15 minutes, make faces at myself in the mirror and take a few ridiculous selfies, then peel it off.
Rub in any excess liquids. After my face dries, it feels slightly tacky, a little tight, but nice and smooth. I usually do this before bed so I’ll skip the face washing and go right for the face oil.
I really like that is vegan and cruelty-free with no sulfates, parabens or phthalates. If you want to try them out, hit that button below.

How to Make Your Perfume Stronger and Last Longer

One of the most common questions I receive is “How do I make my perfume stronger and last longer?” Here’s a few tips that may help:

Stronger: I guess the question should be should I wear a stronger perfume? I know you love your very favorite scent, but that doesn’t mean that everyone around you loves it too. Make sure you are not overdoing it, people around you should just get a hint of your perfume, not be immersed in it when you are near them. And if you hug them and they can taste it and smell it hours later on their clothes, that is also a big no-no. Apply your perfume to your skin and hair, do not spray it liberally on your clothing. You want your scent to blend with your natural body chemistry and become uniquely yours.

And another caution to over-spraying; you smell your own perfume less than others do because your nose becomes accustomed to it. Your brain adjusts naturally to surrounding smells after a certain time (it’s called olfactory adaptation) so while you won’t smell it yourself, other people certainly will.

Last longer: I carry many different lighter scents and a common question is how can I make my perfume last longer?

The best way is to build layers of scent directly on your skin, preferably warm, slightly damp skin when you just come out of the shower. The warm water opens your pores and allows your perfume to be absorbed into your skin.

If you find you showered the night before and need to apply perfume in the morning, keep in mind the molecules in fragrance bind to the oils on your skin when applied. If you have dry skin, you have less skin oil for the perfume molecules to grab, so moisturize your skin for longer lasting perfume. Use a solid perfume or lotion first, then “layer on” your fragrance, it will have a better surface to bind to.

The best place to wear fragrance is on the skin at the pulse points: the wrist, behind the ears, inner elbows and the base of the neck. This is where the fragrance will have the most projection due to the fact that the skin warms up here.

Apply your perfume sparingly and don’t be tempted to rub the fragrance (except for perfume oils, you can dab it in) – it’s better to leave it to unfold naturally as it warms up on the skin. If you need to, carry a smaller size bottle with you to reapply later in the day – particularly if you are going out for the evening – this will freshen up the top notes again.

Many people underestimate the power of scent in the hair. Spritz fragrance directly onto your hair or onto your brush and comb it through your hair. Hair carries scent for a really long time. Applying fragrance directly to your hair creates delicious, mysterious wafts that are bound to get you compliments.

Easy Fragrance Oil Diffuser

Back in the “olden days” people would wash their clothes and then hang them from a string outside. They would use wooden clothespins to secure their laundry on the clothesline to keep it from blowing away.

Today we can use these little “clips” in so many different ways. I use them to keep my chip bags closed and prevent them from getting stale. I also found a nifty way to use them to diffuse my fragrance oils at home and in my car.

Just drizzle a few drops of oil, you can use fragrance and essential oils, on the clothespin and clip it on your vent. Simple. And it works great! You can also clip a few on your home vents and it doesn’t matter if it’s a floor, ceiling or wall vent, it will work anywhere. Plus it’s plastic-free and planet friendly.

I bought a big back of clothespins from Amazon and clip these all over. Give it a try!
